Gaining speed with eye on growth, future development

As a pilot and fast-car enthusiast, Canadian transplant Kevin Bock likes getting into anything that "blows your hair back."

For the last 21/2 years, his Navarre-area business- Bock Construction Inc - has taken pride in moving quality residential building projects along at nearly the same pace.

"I watch a lot of these other projects move along at a snail's pace - for whatever reason, "Bock said recently while holding his brand-new baby boy, Brandon Lee. "I do a lot of high-end stuff. I'm used to dealing with demanding customers. I'm very well organized.

" Bock's construction expertise started at a young age while serving as a master carpenter apprentice in his native Canada, where high-end staircases were his specialty.

After 24 years (12 spent in Michigan) of building custom homes up north, Bock decided to relocate to the warmth of the Gulf Coast, settling on Navarre as his home shortly after hurricanes Ivan and Dennis.

"I really feel like you've got a great bunch of people here, " Bock said. "You ask for directions at a (convenience) store, and six people come up to try and help you. I've just found everyone here has been very friendly. Everyone has been very good to me."

Bock singled out South Coast Construction - a fellow competitor - among others who helped Bock Construction through the tough initial stages of relocating and getting established.

"They were very loyal to me, and that helped me get started here, got me off the ground very quickly, showed me some of the ins and outs for the Florida area," he said.

Now with a Florida contractor's license and a team of roofers, siding installers, trim carpenters and general-purpose crews all on his payroll, Bock takes pride not only in his company's ability to complete homes in a timely manner but also a unique, stylistic approach.

"The building codes and standards in Canada are very tough," Bock said.

"I felt like if I applied a lot of the Canadian standards to my efforts down here - the different ways we do things up there coupled with the fact that I am a perfectionist - it would be a big hit, and it has been."

In addition to resuming his passion for underwater photography, Bock and his wife of one year, Natasha, hope their young son Brandon Lee one day reaps the benefits of the "excellent" Santa Rosa County school system.

Future plans to grow and eventually branch out into commercial building seem right on track.

"Building has been my passion for 26 years. That's what I do best," Bock said. "That's where I really shine."
